Obituary

In profound sorrow we the Management & Staff of Turnbull's Funeral Home & Crematory Services announce the passing of Ann Elizabeth "Mattis" Gumbs, 81, of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands who passed away Sunday, April 07, 2024.

Ann was a beautiful person who spread love and joy everywhere she went. She left behind a void that can never be filled. Ann was preceded in her death by her parents, Thomas Caines and Alecia Thomas-Caines,her daughter Angela Gumbs and her other brothers and sisters included but not limited to, May Constancia Lewis and John Thomas.


Ann is survived by her husband, Wilbert Gumbs; their children, Beth Willis, Lavern Gumbs, Chelsa Denis, Tracy Gumbs, Jerome Gumbs, Alecia Gumbs, and Karema K Gumbs. grandchildren: Desean Willis, Aprill Willis, Jaydon Aquino , Darius Robinson, Aqueesha Renault, Aquan Renault , Daquinda Gumbs, Devonte Thomas, Jamari Gumbs, Avoniecia Browne, Hekiziah Browne, Nemani Denis, Nhalia Denis, Nhino Denis, Aiden Petersen, Aniqua Thomas, great grandchildren ; Aaliyah Willis, Arlayah Willis, Ajahri Greenaway, Ah'miracle Benjamin, Ace Renault, special sisters; Jane Caines and Baby Thomas, special nieces; Alicia Ramos and Triphina Lewis, sisters-in-laws; Gloria Gumbs and Ellenett Lake , brother-in-law Austin Gumbs, Adopted daughter ; Kinza Gotlieb, Samantha Penn , adopted son ; Sylvester lake, special friends: Majorie Williams, the Grant family, Nester , Hyacinth Turnbull ,Angela and Riley Isaac, Karen and Desmond George, Damlet and Harry Buckette, Alecia Brooks, Diane Richards, Tisha and Robert Buckmire, Cicely Eloi ,Phyliss Almestica, Valda and Joseph Petty, Darrell's, Lorel Parker, Maranella Maynard, and many more, to numerous to mention cousins, nieces, nephews.


Ann Gumbs was born on the beautiful island of St. Kitts in 1942 . Ann was one out of 18 children. Ann had her first child at age 24 years . She move to St . Thomas where she met her husband and later had 7 more kids . Ann work at Frenchman reef hotel for 47 years ( where she met some wonderful people) . Ann was known as the bush doctor ( doctor Gumbs) at the reef hotel. Ann had love helping people in so many ways . She attended New Vision Ministries over many years . She was exceptional member of the church ( where she cook herself off) . Ann enjoyed dancing, singing , and cooking for the Lord.
