Obituary

In profound sorrow we the Management & Staff of Turnbull's Funeral Home & Crematory Services announce the passing of Benito E. Dawson, 78, of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands who passed away Friday, February 20, 2026.

Benito Emanuel Dawson was born on March 21, 1947, to William Rudman Dawson and Constance Beatrice Dawson. Affectionately known as "Jackie," he was a quiet, mild-mannered, and well-behaved youth. He began his education at J. Antonio Jarvis Elementary School, also known as Lincoln School, and went on to graduate from Charlotte Amalie High School in June 1967.

On December 15, 1967, Benito enlisted in the United States Army, joining his brother Julian in service to his country. In November 1969, he retired from active duty and continued to serve with the Virgin Islands National Guard. In June 1970, he began a distinguished career with the Virgin Islands Police Department, serving for 20 years before retiring in June 1989 as a Police Detective. In October 1994, Benito embarked on his second professional career with Customs and Border Patrol, serving for 13 years before retiring for the final time in December 2007.

On August 6, 1971, he married his love, Caroline Dawson, to whom he devoted the next 54 years of his life. To his family, Benito was a thoughtful provider. To his friends and the wider community, he was a man of integrity. He will forever be remembered for his warm smile, sharp wit, and dignified demeanor.

Benito is survived by his wife, Caroline Dawson; daughters Sherre Dawson Wright and Jacklyn Dawson James; son Benito Emanuel Dawson II; sister Cynthia Phillips; brothers Aubrey "Cito" Dawson and Raphael "Nicio" Dawson; sisters-in-law Valerie Daley and Leona Dawson; nieces and nephews-in-law Janice Francis, Aaron Penn, Mashama Rhoden; nephews Roberto Dawson, Angel Dawson, Wayne Dawson, Adrian Dawson, Elrod Phillips, Elroy Phillips, Eric Phillips, ErolDawson; and nieces Ivy Dawson, Constance Dawson, AlomaDawson, Adina Dawson, Yvette Phillips, Yvonne Phillips, Yvelle Phillips, Margorie Letsome, Jasmine Cooper, Janice Smith, Elrena Dawson.
