Obituary

In profound sorrow we the Management & Staff of Turnbull's Funeral Home & Crematory Services announce the passing of Eileen Agatha Callwood, 73, of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands who passed away Monday, March 16, 2026 in New York.

She was born to Mr. Arnold Callwood and Ms. Lillian Johnson. Eileen was an intellectually gifted child. She had a deep yearning for learning and became a great student. Her mother placed her in private schools so she could acquire the best education. Lillian made every sacrifice to keep her in these special schools. After graduating from High School, Eileen went to college in both New England and in the United Kingdom over seas. This international educational and cultural exposure broadened her personality and helped her to develop an eclectic thirst to better know the world around her. She graduated from New England College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986. She also continued her education by studying Social Work on the graduate level. She became the proud mother of Arnold Callwood and in his early years, he was the joy of her life.
Eileen became a professional social worker for New York City and devoted many dedicated years to her community. She especially had a concern for the elderly and gave serious attention to their welfare. She served in this vocation until her retirement. In addition to her career, she pursued other interests. Eileen had a love for gourmet cooking so she owned an extensive library of some of the most unique books on the subject. She had a love for art and visited many museums as one of her pastimes. She was a well read person who had a love for history, English literature and popular novels. She was a poet and left several poems that should be published one day. She studied music and learned a little about guitar playing. She was a lover of animals and made contributions to the ASPCA. Most of all she was a devoted and dedicated parent who made raising her son, Arnold top priority.
During the latter years of her life, she was afflicted with illness. Unfortunately, because of these challenges, she spent time in and out of healthcare institutions. Amidst these issues, she still endeavored to make the most out of life. Her final years were spent in convalescent homes. The last 10 months were the most difficult and trying. As a result, her health rapidly declined and a few weeks ago, she was rushed to the hospital and after a brief period, she peacefully passed on Tuesday March 16, 2026. The Lord blessed her with almost 74 years. Several Pastors and Faith leaders visited her around the clock in her moments of crisis. Eileen learned to have a spiritual connection during this period of suffering. The Lord allowed her to rest for now until the resurrection morning. She leaves to mourn her son Arnold Callwood. Many beloved Cousins and relatives from the Callwood, Martin, and George families.
