Obituary

In profound sorrow we the Management & Staff of Turnbull's Funeral Home & Crematory Services announce the passing of John L. Gimenez, Sr., 89, of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands who passed away Monday, July 27, 2026 at his residence. He was surrounded by his devoted wife, loving children, and cherished family and friends.

John L. Gimenez, Sr. was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Alma and Aurelio Ulysses Gimenez; his siblings, InezGimenez Bryant, Aurelio, Amor, and Dr. Alonzo Gimenez, and Pearl Gimenez Humphrey; and his beloved great-grandchildren, Ajani Ortiz and Katana Edwards.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Norma Pickering Gimenez; his brother, Dr. Theodore "Teddy" Gimenez; his sisters-in-law, Ruth Gimenez, Rose Christian and Peggy Pickering; and his five children: Stella Saunders; Paul (Candice) Gimenez; Terry (Maureen) Gimenez; John (Beatrice) Gimenez, Jr.; and Patricia (Dwayne) Nash.

He is also lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Jerome Saldana; Philip (Angie) Saunders; Ayla (Antonio) Edwards; Daniella Saunders; Tristin (Karen) Gimenez; Evan (Madison) Gimenez; Taylor (Josh) Nash and Josh Solomon; Bryce Nash; and Mateo Felix; and, great-grandchildren: K'Cee Saunders, Izaiah Gimenez, Ja'Nalyss Philpott, Aria Saldana, Elijah Baker, Jr., Violet Anderson, Olivia Saunders, Zion Saunders, Anila Edwards, Azrael Edwards, and Akeyla Edwards.

Special family members who played an important role in John's life include Cheryl Sprauve, Ann Swan, Doreen Sylvera, and theGimenez, LaFontaine, Foye, Richardson, Maduro, Harrigan and de Castro families.

John also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, treasured friends, godchildren, and loved ones whose lives were forever touched by his kindness, generosity, and compassion. He is especially remembered by his devoted healthcare support team: Quincy Morrison, Kiana Carter, Julie Watts, Shandell Samnauth Lynch, Goldine Martin,Sarynati Martin, Paris Blanc,-Stuart, Dr. Reva Richardson, Dr. David Weisner, and the loving staff of Heavenly Hearts Home, Premiere Care and Continuum Care.

John attended Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School, Class of 1955, and St. John's University, Class of 1959, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.Proudly serving his country, John was a veteran and a dedicated member of the United States Army Reserve. He carried the discipline, integrity, and commitment he gained through military service into every aspect of his personal and professional life.

John enjoyed a successful career spanning several decades in banking and finance. He was employed by Virgin Islands National Bank, Virgin Islands Telephone Corporation (VITELCO), First Pennsylvania Bank, and later Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, where he retired after years of faithful service. He earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and customers alike for his professionalism, honesty, and unwavering dedication.

Beyond his profession, John was a gifted, self-taught craftsman who could seemingly build or repair anything. He approached every project with patience, precision, and pride. Family and friends knew that whenever something needed fixing, John was the first person they called.

Above all else, John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. His greatest joy came from caring for his family, sharing his wisdom, lending a helping hand, and quietly serving others without expecting anything in return. His kindness, generosity, gentle spirit, and wonderful sense of humor left an enduring impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

The family extends its heartfelt appreciation for the many prayers, expressions of love, and acts of kindness shown during this difficult time.
