Obituary

In profound sorrow we the Management & Staff of Turnbull's Funeral Home & Crematory Services announce the passing of LaVerne N. Benjamin, 68, of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands who passed away Thursday, January 29, 2026.

LaVerne devoted her life to the field of education, spending the majority of her career serving at Bertha C. BoschulteMiddle School.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Eugenie V. GumbsSamuel; her father, Austin H. Benjamin; her stepdaughter, Marie Maduro, her sister, Sonia Gumbs, and her brothers, Sylvester Samuel Jr. and Cornell Benjamin.

She is survived by her life-long partner, Glen Maduro; sons, Glen Maduro Jr., Greg Maduro, Gary Maduro; daughter, Gail Maduro-Johnson; son-in-law, Russell Johnson; grandchildren, N'Cairah, Glen III, Gabrielle, Jordyn, Journee, Jayden, & Jasmine Maduro, Russell Jr., Riley, & Rayna Johnson; sisters, Carolyn Samuel, Ingrid Benjamin-Moses, Joycelyn Benjamin Henry, Joan Benjamin, brothers, Lionel Benjamin, Mervin Samuel; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Maduro Hart, Delores Vanterpool, Amy Vanterpool; brother-in-law, Lorne "Moe" Moses; uncle, Samuel Gumbs; aunts, Ruby Gumbs, Calma Gumbs, Bridgett Gumbs; sister-cousin, Yvonne I. S. Pilgrim; nephews, Cerone Samuel, Jose Lima, Julio Hodge, Antione Samuel, Andre Samuel, Jhon Benjamin Moses Sr., Corey Benjamin, Shawn Benjamin, and Cornell Benjamin Jr.; nieces, Theresa James, Tremesha Samuel, LaToya Samuel, Jhonae Moses, Courtney Benjamin, Carmella Benjamin; Godmother, Joan Phillips.

Many special relatives too numerous to mention from the Gumbs, Burner, Caiby, Clarke, Hill, Huyghue, Mahoney, Maduro, Sebastian, Schulterbrandt, and White families.Special relatives also from the Benjamin, Henry, Francis, Anthony, Kean, Millin, Braithwaite, Hendricks, Richards, Knevil, Sewer, Moorehead, Chinnery, Crawley, Davis, Brunn, and Thompson families.

Many special friends too numerous to mention; especially those from the Charlotte Amalie High School Class of 1974 and the past & present staff at Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School.
