In profound sorrow we the Management & Staff of Turnbull's Funeral Home & Crematory Services announce the passing of Vera E. Charles, 81, of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands who passed away Sunday, July 19, 2026 in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Vera E. Charles, daughter of Ismay Berkley and Richard Harrigan of St. Kitts, was born on March 17, 1945, on the beautiful island of St. Kitts, West Indies.

Though Vera was a native of St. Kitts, she lovingly called St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, home. It was there that she built her life, raised her seven children, and created a legacy rooted in strength, devotion, and love. Her home was a place of care, guidance, and comfort, and her presence brought warmth to those fortunate enough to know her.

Above all, Vera loved her family. She will be remembered for the love she poured into them, the wisdom she shared through her life experiences, and the quiet strength that carried her through every season. She gave generously of herself and leaves behind memories that will continue to bless and sustain her loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Winston E. Charles of Tindale Road, St. Johns, Antigua, her sisters, Myrtle Douglas, Pam Lewis, and brothers Willie and Errol Berkeley.

Vera is survived by her children, Annette, Thomas, and QMC(SW) Venetta Charles, USN, (RET), CDR Kathleen A. Colter, MSC, USN, Sharon, Eugene, and Issac Charles. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Antwon, Charlene, Tiffany, Raven, Morgan Charles, and Gabriella Colter, along with four great-great-grandchildren; and many other loving relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

Special mention, her Niece Jennifer Morton and forever friend Mrs. Ruthlyn Simon; Pastor & First Lady Thorpe, Momma B, and Sister Carole of Cedar of Lebanon Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Chesapeake, Virginia.

Her journey began in St. Kitts, flourished in St. Thomas, and came to a peaceful close in Chesapeake, Virginia. Across every place she called home, Vera touched lives in lasting ways. Her legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, extended family, and all who carry her memory in their hearts.
