In profound sorrow we the Management & Staff of Turnbull's Funeral Home & Crematory Services announce the passing of Wilfred E. Smith, 88, of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands who passed away Sunday, February 08, 2026.
Wilfred was born on August 12, 1937, in West End, Tortola, British Virgin Islands to the late Lillian Hodge-Chapman.
As a youngster growing up in West End, he attended school, enjoyed fishing and swimming, and cherished his role as a big brother to his siblings. As a teenager, he migrated to St. Thomas in search of newopportunities and a better life. Wilfred enlisted in the U.S. Army in July 1959 and served his country honorably for two years.
Wilfred was a hardworking, dedicated, and driven man who was employed by several companies and departments including the Fire Department's Crash House at the airport, Manassah Bus Line, School Busing Inc., Department of Public Works (VITRAN), and Mahagony Run Golf Course. His more than 60 years of service culminated in his retirement from the Department of Property and Procurement, Government of the Virgin Islands.
An avid golfer, Wilfred participated in numeroustournaments throughout the Caribbean and the United States. He was also a passionate golf instructor who willingly shared his knowledge with his children and his students. A devoted baseball fan, he spent many days and evening watching his favorite baseball team, the New York Yankees. An excellent swimmer, he often shared stories of swimming the channel between West End and the mainland of Tortola. Wilfredenjoyed life to the fullest and will be dearly missed.
Wilfred was preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne Smith; his mother, Lillian Hodge-Chapman; his grandparents, Gazette and Euphrasia (Durant) Hodge; his uncles, Thomas Hodge, Garfield Hodge; his aunts, Augusta Penn, Alice Delville, Adina Hodge, Florence Sprauve; his nephew, Cleve Christopher; and his niece, Lisa Christopher.
Wilfred is survived by his children, Leila Smith, Wilfred "Sputy" Smith, Janelle Robinson (Marlon), Russell Smith, Kregg Smith (Sherna); his grandchildren, Marquita Robinson, Jordan Smith (Simone), Justin Smith (Kisha), Mariah Johnson (Jalin), Shalene Phillips, Laisha Smith; his great-grandchildren, Jalin Johnson, Jr., A'Mira Smith, and Aurora Smith; his siblings, Ilma Rouse, Iona Duncan, Ascelia Marks-Vincent, Clarice Foy-Middlebrook(Joseph), and Vernon Foy; his nieces, Joy Duncan (Leighton Burrowes), Kishma Vincent, Chereez Frett, Crystal Foy; his nephews, Winston Christopher, Ralston Christopher, Jerry Christopher, John Isaac (Vanessa), Kevin Vincent, Shamoi Ferris; best friends, Maurice Donovan, Dennis McEvoy, Ruppert Isaac,Frank Osborne and Zula Phillips; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.
